My Girls Surprised Me With Newspaper Art

This is the week of Thanksgiving and I'm thankful for many things, most importantly, my family. I'd like to share with you three crafty projects created by my beautiful daughters who know how to put a smile on my face by turning trash to treasure.

The girls, ages 11 and 5, utilized leftover newspaper I had out while painting our upstairs hallway. They also used cardstock, washi tape, a star stencil, stickers and Mini Glue Dots.

My 20-Year-Old Cheerleading Scrapbook

When I first started scrapbooking, I utilized construction paper, scissors, glue, tape and an assortment of free (and mostly handmade) embellishments. In the early years of my beloved hobby, I had to be either creative with what was available or left with plain and boring scrapbook pages.

I chose the creative route and my love of colorful scrapbook pages has followed me to this day. Take a peek at my 20-year-old cheerleading scrapbook:

Without page protectors, my scrapbooks were loaded with plenty of pop-up pages, allowing me to create a three-page spreads, six-page spreads and sometimes, even larger layouts.

The introductory pages said "Cheerleaders are..." and when opened up said "Athletes" (always debated back in my day).

Here's an example of several pop-up pages within a layout:

I included try-out information, practice schedules and several photos:

The pages weren't always pretty:

But I made them work and told my cheerleading squad's story:

I introduced the football team...

with a spectacular display:

And then there was the Homecoming game (flowers included):

Of course there are plenty of pages in between and I plan on adding them to Flickr. And I have a secret. The scrapbook isn't finished. I organized well, but never took the time to complete this scrapbook. Will I ever get around to it? Only time will tell.

I most definitely enjoyed going down memory lane and I hope you did too. There's still one more scrapbook I have yet to find. It's my very first one and not sure where it is or if it still exists. I was around 5-years-old when I started my first scrapbook, so that means I've been a scrapbooker for 30 years! Does that make me old?!?

How Did I Scrapbook 23 Years Ago?

During the last visit to my parent's house, I pulled down three big bins of 90s memorabilia from an attic crawl space, most of which was my cheerleading things and old scrapbooks.

I photographed much of that memorabilia, including several pages of my scrapbooks. Today, I'm sharing one of my oldest scrapbooks dating back to 1990.

This is how I scrapbooked 23 years ago...

Back then, there were no page protectors.

Embellishments were magazine cut-outs and computer clip-art...

marker doodles and writing...

ephemera...

and my own artwork.

I used construction paper, paste and tape.

And there were plenty of pop-up pages to show off my creativity.

That's how I scrapbooked over two decades ago. After all these years, I still love scrapbooking and incredibly lucky the bins of memorabilia survived our house fire in 1996. I have my memories and happy to share them with you.

Digital Scrapbooking: 4 Simple & Quick Pages

When I first became a mom, I scrapbooked every single 4x6 photo I took and printed. This was over a decade ago and before I even owned a digital camera. For my oldest daughter's first birthday, I filled an entire 8.5x11 scrapbook with tons of memorabilia, photos and included all of her cards. By the time I had my second child, birthday scrapbooks became easier, less time consuming and more cost effective by creating photo books.

I recently ordered a photo book for my youngest little lady after celebrating her 5th birthday. I like to mix things up by creating digital scrapbook pages on my phone, computer and by using the online software made available via Shutterfly.

Here are four simple and quick digital pages I created just for that photo book:

I added these pages to the photo book, included plenty of other photos and journaling while I customized the pages to fit my style. An easy peasy time-saver!

Tutorial: Preschool Graduation Scrapbook Layout

My youngest is graduating from preschool next week and I'm both excited and sad. I'm looking forward to summer break, but we're saying goodbye to one of our favorite teachers. Here's a scrapbook layout featuring that favorite teacher at last year's preschool graduation:

"Last Day" 8.5x11 Scrapbook Layout

Supplies:

Glue Dots® (Glue Lines, Ultra Thin, Pop Up)

cardstock (kraft, red, yellow, black, white)

edge distresser

black acrylic paint

paintbrush

black ink (StazOn)

apple stamp

white letter stickers (American Crafts Thickers)

black marker

scissors

paper trimmer

one photo

1. Cut a large half circle out of white cardstock and attach to kraft cardstock using Glue Dots Glue Lines®.

2. Distress and paint the edges of the layout. Set aside to dry.

3. Distress the edges of the photo, mat onto black cardstock and use Ultra Thin Glue Dots® to attach to the layout.

4. Stamp ten apples onto red cardstock, cut out and use Pop Up Glue Dots® to attach them to the border of the half circle.

5. Cut six 3 x 1/2" strips of red, blue and yellow cardstock (two for each color) and use black marker to create a border along the edges of each. Adhere three strips to the top of the layout and three to the bottom using Ultra Thin Glue Dots®.

6. Adhere letter stickers to the layout to create a title.

7. Add journaling using a black marker.

Digital Scrapbooking: Highlights from the Birthday Scrapbook

I've been busy scrapbooking all month long during Layout a Day. The beginning of May was full of digital scrapbook layouts, something I don't usually do during LOAD, but since there was rush to complete my daughter's birthday album (Shutterfly Groupon was about to expire!), I was glued to my laptop.

For the past year and a half, I've been digitally scrapbooking the present and printing the layouts as photobooks. My 4x6 photo printing has been reduced significantly. I'm still in love with traditional scrapbooking and will continue to play with paper since I have plenty of older photos ready to be scrapbooked and use collages for my Take Twelve project.

A birthday-themed photobook is just the thing to reduce all that 4x6 photo clutter and is a great way to be able to share dozens of pics in a smaller form when compared to a typical traditional scrapbook.

Below are a few favorite layouts from my daughter's 4th birthday (it was a Hello Kitty theme!):

The layout above was from a pre-made template in My Memories Suite and all I had to do was add the photos. I ended up completing three layouts in less than 30 minutes using templates (one reason why I love digital scrapbooking - it can be fast).

But, for me, I tend to like simpler pages that I design myself when digital scrapbooking, like this one below:

"Thank You" Digital Scrapbook Layout

I was inspired by a cereal box (see it here) the day I made the "Thank You" layout and the photo was from the exact moment my daughter expressed her gratitude after opening her birthday presents.

My hubby grilled out during the party and I took this opportunity to ask his mom to take a photo of us. We are rarely photographed together and of course, there was a funny story to compliment it:

7 ways to introduce children to scrapbooking

My eight-year-old daughter has been scrapbooking for most of her life. As a toddler, she sat with me and adhered stickers to paper and learned how to use decorative scissors. By the time she was in preschool, she had her very own scrapbook filled with photos, pretty paper and plenty of stickers. These days, she's busy taking photographs of her friends and family, as well as writing stories about her life.

I enjoy being able to share my love of scrapbooking with my daughter and happy that my youngest, age three, has taken an interest in the hobby as well.

Here are seven simple ways to scrapbook with your child:

1. Let your child look at scrapbooks and teach him/her how to properly handle the albums.

2. Pass unwanted supplies onto your child. (Kids love stickers!)

3. Share your scrapbooking books and magazines for ideas and inspiration.

4. Go shopping for your child's very own scrapbook and supplies.

5. Choose photographs to scrapbook together or allow your child to be the photographer to capture his/her own memories.

6. Create a routine of writing down memories of family, friends and special events.

7. Set aside time on a regular basis for the both of you to scrapbook together or invite friends over for a mini-crop.
